What is a training visa 407?
The Training Subclass 407 Visa is a temporary visa for people to undergo occupational training or professional development in Australia. The visa is valid for stay in Australia for up to 2 years.
Subclass 407 Training visa ( 6 to 20 Months Visa)
This visa allows you to take part in workplace-based occupational training activities to improve your skills for your job, area of tertiary study, field of expertise or in a professional development training program in Australia.
There are 3 types of occupational training covered by this visa:
- Occupational training required for registration
- Occupational training to improve skills in an eligible occupation
- Occupational training for capacity building overseas
Occupational training to enhance skills
That is a most common stream for applicants as long as your occupation is on the list and you can have your occupational training
- a structured workplace training program; and
- a specifically tailored to the training needs of the nominee; and Training Plan
- a duration that meets the specific training needs of the nominee.
Eligibility
the nominee has the equivalent of at least 12 months of full-time experience in the occupation in the 24 months immediately preceding the time of the nomination. Nomination related information
- the person who nominated the program of occupational training;
- the nominee;
- the occupation;
- the program of occupational training;
- the circumstances in which the occupation is undertaken;
- the circumstances in which the program of occupational training is undertaken.

- the Medium and Longterm Strategic Skills List;
- the Regional Occupation List;
- the Short-term Skilled Occupation List; and
the 6digit code listed in column 2 of that item is the 6digit ANZSCO code for the occupation;
the occupation applies to an applicant or proposed applicant for, a Subclass 407 (Training) visa if the tasks of the occupation that are to be performed by the nominee correspond to the tasks set out in the ANZSCO code specified for the occupation.
Occupational training is required for registration
- the occupational training is necessary for the nominee to obtain registration, membership or licensing in Australia, or in the home country of the nominee
- the registration, membership or licensing is required in order for the nominee to be employed in the occupation of the nominee in Australia.
- the duration of the occupational training is necessary for the nominee to obtain registration, membership or licensing in Australia
- the occupational training is workplace based.
- the nominee has appropriate qualifications and experience to undertake the occupational training.
Occupational training for capacity building overseas – overseas qualification
- the nominee is required to complete a period of no more than 6 months of practical experience, research or observation to obtain a qualification from a foreign educational institution;
- the occupational training is a structured workplace-based training program specifically tailored to the training needs of the nominee.
Occupational training for capacity building overseas – government support
- the occupational training is supported by a government agency, or by the government of a foreign country that is the home country of the nominee;
- the occupational training is a structured workplace-based training program that is:
- a specifically tailored to the training needs of the nominee;
- a duration that meets the specific training needs of the nominee.
