WHAT IS A STUDENT GUARDIAN VISA (SUBCLASS 590)

The Student Guardian visa allows applicants to accompany an international student (Student visa holders) to Australia for up to five years. The purpose is providing for student’s care and welfare.

  • ensure that school-aged children on a Student visa have appropriate care during their stay in Australia.

What you can do with this visa 

You can come to Australia to provide care and support for a student visa holder

  • who is under 18 years of age
  • or over 18 in exceptional circumstances

You can also care for more than one student

You can study a short course or training, less than 20 hours per week within 3 months

This visa allows you to stay in Australia as the guardian of an international student younger than 18 years of age studying in Australia on a student visa.

Who is eligible for the student guardian visa 590?

The Student Guardian visa applicant must genuinely intend to reside in Australia with their cared student.

Student Guardian should be 21 years old and

  • the student’s parent,
  • the student’s custodian
  • or the student’s relative

Financial requirement

Ensure to have enough money to support yourself and the student during your stay.

For instance

  • travel expenses – AUD1,000 to 2,000
  • living costs and expenses: a period of 12 months or more – AUD21,041 (annual living costs)
  • any other children coming with you  – AUD3,152;

  • supporting evidence that your partner (who is not traveling to Australia) will support you with an annual income AUD 70,000 or more.

How to apply for the student guardian visa (subclass 590)

The student guardian visa can be applied online after the student visa lodgement or at the same time.

You can be in or outside Australia when you apply for the visa and when we decision made on your application.

If you are in Australian, you should hold BV or another visa to apply.

Health insurance

Paying for medical treatment in Australia can be expensive. Thus, all Student Guardian visa applicants must provide evidence of OVHC health insurance during their period of intended stay in Australia.

Bring Family members

You can bring your dependent children who are under 6 years old.

The dependent child must be under 6 years old at the time of the visa decision.

If Children are 6 years or older, they  should apply for a student visa to accompany their parents to Australia.)

Genuine temporary entrant (GTE) requirement

When you apply for the student guardian visa you should also probide your GTE plan to stay in Australia temporarily

For instance

  • your personal circumstances employment in your home country
  • your immigration history
  • anything else that relates to your plan to remain in Australia temporarily.
  • proof of property or other significant assets in your home country
  • a return air ticket
  • a letter from your employer confirming your leave.

Student Guardian visa grant

Well – prepare your documents as above, once you have your visa granted your passport will digitally link to your visa as there is no label attached on your passport.

Ensure to enter Australia within the first entry date.

Travel outside Australia

You can travel outside Australia and return as many times as you want while the visa is valid. But you can’t leave Australia without your children (the student visa holder) unless you have made alternative arrangements.

This visa doesn’t give you working rights in Australia. In other words, you cannot work with this visa if a condition 8101 (No Work) attached to your visa.

Yes. you can study an English Language Intensive Course for Overseas Students (ELICOS) up to 20 hours per week, or alternatively, you can do 3 months of study or training.

Your visa to stay in Australia will depend on the student’s visa length, allowing the guardian visa holder to stay the same length as the student they are looking after. Usually 2 to 5 years as student visas.

If the guardian visa expires and you want to stay in the country and continue to provide guardianship to the student, you will need to re-apply for a new guardian visa 590.

Yes. A parent can intend to accompany their two children to Australia on a Student Guardian visa. The Student Guardian visa should be granted as same as the student visa, whatever the late one.

  • Be a parent, a custodian or a relative

    You must be:

    • the parent of the student visa holder, or
    • a person who has custody of the student, or
    • a relative of the student, aged 21 years or older, nominated in writing by a parent or person who has custody of the student
  • You will provide care and support

    You will provide care and support for:

    • a student visa holder who is under 18 years of age or
    • a student visa holder who is 18 years of age or older and needs care and support due to exceptional circumstance
  • Have enough money for your stay

    Show evidence that you have enough money to pay for your stay in Australia for the costs and expenses of yourself, your accompanying family members, and in most cases, the student visa holder.
