Migration Amendment (COVID-19 Concessions) Regulations 2020 updated 17th Sep 2020
From 19 September 2020, a number of concessions will be available for certain visa holders impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
COVID-19 concessions are to help you continue on your visa pathway if you have been disadvantaged by COVID-19 border closures, business restrictions or the economic downturn.
The Australian government has introduced legislative amendments to its Migration Regulations that come into effect on 17 September 2020.
“COVID-19 Concessions” are being introduced to limit the impact of the pandemic on visa holders outside Australia.

COVID‑19 concession period
The COVID-19 concession period commences from 1 February 2020 and is an interim arrangement
(1) The concession period is the period (the initial concession period) that:
(a) commences on 1 February 2020; and
(b) ends on a day specified by the Minister under sub-regulation

Key changes to affecting 485 visa applicants stranded by COVID-induced restrictions include:
- applicants can apply for, and be granted, a Subclass 485 visa while outside Australia during a concession period;
- Applicants will no longer be required to have held a student visa within the six-month period immediately before making the application.
- the application has been extended from six to 12 months.
What is Concession periods ?
Concession periods is new legislation aiming to assist certain temporary and provisional visa holders, including individuals who are on a pathway to permanent residence but affected by the COVID19 pandemic.
