This temporary visa 884 lets the aged parent stay temporarily in Australia and apply for the permanent visa PR – 864 later.

You should at least one child to nominate you for the visa who

Note: settled in Australia means they must have lived permanently in Australia for at least two years before the subclass 884 visa application is lodged.

You must

  • have an eligible child who is a settled Australian citizen, an Australian permanent resident or an eligible New Zealand citizen
  • be old enough to receive the Australian aged pension
  • be in Australia, but not in immigration clearance, when you apply for this visa and when we make our decision
  • not have a Sponsored Parent (Temporary) (Subclass 870) visa when applying for this visa

Cost of Contributory – Aged Parent (Temporary) visa 884

This visa costs from AUD33,285.

The subclass 884 Aged Contributory Parent Temporary visa provides an option for applicants who want to spread the contributory cost of the visa over a longer period of time.

It means you can pay for

  • Pay the first installment when you apply
    • An Initial Application Fee of $3,770 and $1,880 for any additional applicant.
  •  Pay the  second installment before the visa grant
    • The application fee is  $29,130 for each
  • Then you pay an additional fee when you apply for the permanent aged visa 864
    • The application fee is $19,420 for each

Note: In total, the cost is AUD$52,250 for a single parent and AUD$102,680 for both parents.


Comparison to the cost of Permanent Aged Visa PR – 864

It means you can pay for

  • Pay the first installment when you apply
    • An Initial Application Fee of $3,770 and $1,880 for any additional applicant.
  • Pay the  second installment before the visa grant
    •  The second installment of $43,600 is required to be paid before the visa is granted.

Note: In total, the cost is AUD$47,370 for a single parent and AUD$92,770 for both parents.

How long to process the contributory Aged Parent (Temporary) visa 884

This visa takes approximately 18months to 36 months to process as our experiences.

Currently, there is no processing time available and applications are subject to capping and queueing.

Queue release dates, as at June 2020 for final processing:

  • Contributory Parent visa applications with a queue date up to May 2016
  • Parent visa applications with a queue date up to August 2010
  • Aged Parent visa applications with a queue date up to May 2012

You can apply for the permanent subclass 864 visas before this visa expires (2 years).

As a two-step process by first Applying for the subclass 884 visa and then the subclass 864 visa allows you to spread the cost of the visas over a number of years.

Bridging visa for aged parent visa 884

You can be in Australia, when you apply and when they decide on your application.

If you apply for this visa in Australia while on another temporary visa or tourist 600, you will obtian a bridging visa A ( BVA).

The BVA allows you to remain lawfully in Australia while you are waiting for your visa application process.

However, If you want to travel outside Australia, you may have no right of re-entry into Australia with BVA. But the BVB should be applied for and it will allow limited travel during the processing of your application in Australia.

The standard period of time allowed for travel during the processing of an application is three (3) months or longer upon the compelling circumstances.

The applicant will have full work rights while holding their bridging visa A.

Note: if your current tourist visa with no further stay condition, you should have a waiver of this condition before your parents’ visa application.

Aged Parent visa Assessment

All aged parent visas are paper lodgement and should be posted to the department office.

Applications for this visa are assessing in 2 stages.

  1. Check eligibility and either add the application to the queue or refuse it.
  2. Continue assessing the application when a place becomes available and make a decision.

Make sure you prepare the application

  • you fill forms and application correctly;
  • you include all the documents and information from you  per requirements;

Otherwise, your application might take longer to process if need to verify your information.

Meet the balance-of-family test

You should meet the balance-of-family test.

  • at least half of your children and step-children are eligible children, or
  • there are more eligible children living in Australia than in any other single country

Have the assurance of support

For 10 years

  • $10,000 for 1 adult
  • $14,000 for 2 adults.
